My journey as a cinematographer has been a thrilling and fulfilling ride through the world of visual storytelling. It all began with my formal education, completing my BFA from the Department of Fine Arts at Jamia Millia Islamia in 1985, which laid the foundation for my artistic eye and understanding of composition. Building on this, I pursued a Masters in Graphic Design and Painting at MS University Baroda, further honing my artistic skills and deepening my appreciation for visual aesthetics.
As a young artist, I faced challenges, but the turning point came when I ventured into the enchanting realm of Bollywood in 1988. The opportunity to assist Master cinematographer Anil Mehta in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” not only opened doors for me but also allowed me to understand the intricacies of cinematography and its power to convey emotions through moving images.
The milestones of my cinematography journey include the creation of the short film “Tight Rope Walker,” which garnered competative recognition at the 57th International Film Festival in Venice in 2000, and the film “Divya Drishti,” winning the Best Film Award at the Digital Talkies Film Festival in New Delhi in 2002. Attending the Budapest Master Class Kodak Workshop in 2005 under the guidance of Vilmos Zigmond and John Schwartzman further refined my craft, adding an extra edge to my creative process.
Since then, I have had the privilege of working on numerous projects, from television series like “Spirit of India” for the Discovery Channel to impactful films like “Bhopal: Prayer for Rain” which was nominated for Tokyo International Film Festival in 2013, Each project has allowed me to explore new storytelling techniques with global actors Martin Sheen, Kal Penn, Mischa Barton along with Rajpal Naurang Yadav, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Satish Kaushik, experiment with lighting and framing, and push the boundaries of my artistic expression in the realm of cinematography.
Throughout my cinematography journey, I have been fortunate to work on several remarkable films that have left a significant impact. In 2010, I contributed my skills to “The Experiment” with Hollywood actors Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker and Maggie Grace, a gripping film where I was part of the Camera and Electrical Department, showcasing my expertise on an international stage.
In 2017, I had the privilege of being a part of the Camera and Electrical Department for the movie ” Ittefaq ” starring Sidharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna. where my visual storytelling added depth and intrigue to the thrilling narrative.
The year 2019 brought an exciting collaboration with the talented actors Hrithik Roshan, Vaani Kapoor, and Tiger Shroff in the action-packed movie “War” As a member of the Camera and Electrical Department, I played a vital role in capturing the electrifying visuals that brought the film to life.
Looking ahead, my journey continues with the highly anticipated film ” Pathaan” scheduled for release in 2023. This project features the iconic Shah Rukh Khan, the versatile John Abraham, and the enchanting Deepika Padukone. Once again, as part of the Camera and Electrical Department, I am entrusted with the responsibility of capturing the essence of the story through stunning visuals.
Each project has been a unique experience, allowing me to collaborate with exceptional talent and contribute to the art of visual storytelling. Whether it’s through capturing thrilling action sequences or delving into the nuances of a suspenseful plot, my passion for cinematography drives me to push boundaries, experiment with different techniques, and create images that resonate with audiences worldwide. My cinematography journey remains an ongoing exploration of creativity and an unwavering commitment to the power of visual expression.
